Abbreviations

As with any field, adult literacy has its own terminology. Abbreviations you may find in this directory are listed below.

ABE
Adult Basic Education (Reading, writing, math, language, arts, etc., grade levels 9-12, some 7-8).
BIA
Bureau of Indian Affairs (An entity of the Department of the Interior, overseeing reservations).
CAI
Computer Aided or Assisted Instruction (The use of educational software for teaching).
DABCC
Doña Ana Branch Community College (Located in Las Cruces).
ENMU
Eastern New Mexico University (Located in Portales, with branch campuses in Clovis, Roswell, and Ruidoso).
ESL
English as a Second Language (The focus is on conversational English, with some reading and writing).
ESOL
English for Speakers of Other Languages (See ESL).
GED
General Educational Development (High School Equivalency exams, refers to adult instruction from grades 9-12). HEP – High School Equivalency Program (A federal program for migrant, seasonal, and agricultural workers, funded by the Department of Labor).
HELP
Home Education Livelihood Program (A private, non-profit organization serving the migrant, seasonal, agricultural, and economically disadvantaged populations in education, job
training, and health programs throughout New Mexico).
LVTI
Luna Vocational Technical Institute (Area vocational school located in Las Vegas).
NCC
Navajo Community College (Located in Shiprock; supported by tribal and federal funds).
NMJC
New Mexico Junior College (Located in Hobbs).
NMSU
New Mexico State University (Located in Las Cruces; branch campuses in Alamogordo, Artesia, Grants, and Carlsbad).
NNMCC
Northern New Mexico Community College (Campuses located in Española and El Rito with a satellite center in Taos).
SER
Service, Employment, Redevelopment (Programs in Santa Fe, Las Cruces, and Albuquerque).
SIPI
Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute.
SFCC
Santa Fe Community College (Located in Santa Fe).
SJC
San Juan College – Located in Farmington).
TOEFL
Teachers of English as a Foreign Language.
UNM
University of New Mexico (Located in Albuquerque with branch campuses in Gallup, Los Alamos, and Valencia County).
WNMU
Western New Mexico University (Located in Silver City; serves some two-year college functions)
